That’s a lot of glitter. Seriously, if monetary worth were measured in glitter, the idiots of the Westboro Baptist Church would have swimming pools of glitter (that’s another measurement of glitter). As crazy as that sounds, it’s nowhere near as insane as the activities and protests of the WBC. From funerals to weddings to concerts, there doesn’t seem to be anything besides protesting the the Westboro Baptist Church does, in fact, like.
There has been lots of Westboro Baptist Church violence and scandal over the years, by protesters, Church members, and their opponents. After pouring through the history of Westboro Baptist Church, here are the 10 craziest things the WBC has ever protested, the stupid protest signs they brought with them to the garbage party, why and what made the protests so unnecessary/insane.
ALL Of Their Nitpicky Anti-Gay Protests
Westboro Baptist Church of Topeka, Kansas is infamously known for picketing any event supportive of the gay community, including gay pride weeks, parades, etc. The group goes to an extreme in carrying out daily picketing in Topeka (six per day with fifteen on Sunday) and travels nationally to picket the funerals of gay victims of murder, gay-bashing, or people who have died from AIDS. They blame every tragedy in the world on homosexuals, and honestly believe that homosexuality should be considered a capital crime.
They protest gay funerals (as well as others), which is HIGHLY inappropriate, cruel and offensive, and even protest gay companies… but they take picketing to a whole new “6 degrees of Kevin Bacon” level with some of these next protests.
Military Funerals, Funerals In General
funerals of gay people since their inception.
In April 2008, Westboro picketed the funerals of three students who were killed in a house fire at the University of Wisconsin–Stout in Menomonie, Wisconsin, and in February 2009, the group protested at the funeral of a plane crash victim. Students from the nearby University at Buffalo and the Buffalo area held a peaceful counter protest, holding up white sheets to shield the victim’s family from the “Phelpses” (a derogatory term for the WBC members, calling them the name of their founder, Fred Phelps). In 2006, they protested a memorial for victims of the Sago mine disaster claiming it was God’s punishment on the US for tolerating homosexuality.
In 2009 Westboro picketed the funeral of recording artist Michael Jackson after his death in June claiming a posthumous memorial of his career is really “worshiping the dead.” Members of the Westboro Baptist Church recorded a song titled “God Hates the World”, an adaptation of Jackson’s “We Are the World.”
Westboro’s Online Protest of Lady Gaga
Recently, the fine people of the WBC went on to protest outside of a Lady Gaga concert in St. Louis with their infamous “God Hates” and “God Hates Lady Gaga” signs due to her support of gay rights. According to the WBC, she is a “gender-confused, self-loathing, tone-deaf hand basket” (what does that even mean??). The WBC also sent out a news release that wrote:
“‘Art’ and ‘fashion’ are the euphemisms, the guise under which proud whore Lady Gaga teaches rebellion against God (incidentally, her claim to the title of ‘lady’ is sound only if she tacks on ‘of the night,’ thereby alluding to another euphemism of what she is.) As much as she’d like to pretend otherwise, there’s nothing new or different about this particular hussy’s pretentious prancing. Does the simple s**t truly think that she can change God’s standards by seducing a generation of rebels into joining her in fist-raised, stiff-necked, hard-hearted rebellion against Him? Get real!”
